Basketball 101

One of my teammate reminded me 2 basic basketball plays this morning during practice.

1. Say, he's at the high post and I'm at the wing. When he comes in toward the 45 degree zone,
I should then run toward the top of the key to create better flow or be ready to receive a pass from him while he may be setting a pick. Or better yet, by me running around him toward the top, the defense may be confused and allowed him to slip pass the defense and score easily.

My mistake this morning was that I stayed at the wing and actually moved toward the 3pt line. Though I had a wide open shot, the court movement was not good, and the defender in between us may be able to deny the pass.

2. While I have the ball and my teammate is at the top of the key cutting toward the basket, I should pass the ball to his front so he can easily catch and score. My mistake today was that I passed the ball to the top of the key and he had to slow down to catch the ball with his right hand and his motion toward the basketball was interrupted.

The big lesson this morning had to be me witnessing the will of a competitor. While the team was down 5 pts to girls' team and the other four guys were giving up on the game, Iwamoto san just wanted the ball down the stretch and hit 2 straight clutched 3pts to win the game. That's what I should look up to and adapt to my play. The will to win.
